Core Sports

At BCS, our pupils engage with a robust Physical Education curriculum designed to offer a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

We offer three core academic courses:
• Cambridge National Sport Science: This course provides an in-depth look at the scientific principles behind physical performance. Pupils explore topics like anatomy, sports injuries, and how to improve and maintain fitness. Ideal for those interested in the physiological and psychological aspects of sport.
• OCR GCSE Physical Education: A combination of practical and theoretical learning, this course helps pupils
understand how exercise affects the body and improves overall performance. Alongside physical skills, it covers
training techniques, sports psychology, and the influence of health and fitness on performance. This course is
assessed with 40% practical and 60% theory and is therefore a perfect qualification for those who love to play sport and represent the school in a number of different teams.
• BTEC Sport Level 3 (6th Form): Tailored for those pursuing a career in sport or related fields, the BTEC offers a
practical and vocational approach. Pupils explore topics such as coaching, sports development, and fitness training while gaining valuable hands-on experience through assignments and real-world scenarios.

Our philosophy is ‘Sport for All.’ Every pupil has the opportunity to represent the school through our A and B teams, ensuring participation across all ability levels. Our main aim is that everyone enjoys taking part in sport and develops a lifelong interest and passion for being physically healthy. From Year 7 to Sixth Form, students are encouraged to develop their skills and represent BCS in a wide range of sports, including rugby, football, cricket, athletics, netball, cross country, swimming, basketball, badminton, and many more.

Within the PE curriculum, pupils receive one hour of Physical Education per week and participate in a two-hour games afternoon each week, where the majority of school fixtures take place. This structure ensures a strong balance between regular physical education and competitive opportunities, helping pupils develop both their skills and teamwork on and off the field.

The current allocation over a two week period for each year group is:

Years 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 Two single and two double lessons.
Years 12 & 13 Two single lessons. Pupils are able to utilise sport facilities outside of this.

PE and Games

PE lessons at BCS have a primary focus on the development of skills, knowledge, understanding, character, confidence, health and fitness. These lessons offer the opportunity for pupils to learn about the sport and further develop the finer motor skills of the sport being taught.

Games sessions at BCS are historically held in the afternoons and allow pupils to participate on a competitive platform for the school. This may be against other schools and teams or simply in an inter-house competitive format. BCS Games afternoons allow pupils to put into practice what they have learnt within their PE lessons and have a primary focus on game play and participation.

The two combined will enable our young people to forge a positive lifelong relationship with physical activity and sport.
