Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) Intent

At Bournemouth Collegiate School, we want PSHE education to equip pupils to live healthy, safe capable, responsible, productive, and balanced lives. We will support the personal development of pupils by providing opportunities to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, and enable them to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand the influences of their decisions. To do this we need to support students to understand themselves, manage their emotions, develop empathy and deal with change as and when it takes place.

How do we implement the PSHE curriculum at BCS?

At BCS students receive a weekly PSHE lesson within their tutor time. This is often supported by the whole school assembly, year group assemblies and tutor times during the week also. This allows sufficient time and opportunities to recall information to be able to embed the knowledge and skills within their long-term memory.

To do this successfully we have included three main themes that run through the academic years, these include:

1. Health and wellbeing
2. Living in the wider world
3. Relationships

Students complete work on a central onenote system and staff use specifically designed resources to ensure consistency across the school. This is closely linked to the tutor time curriculum map to strengthen the time spent on PSHE overall.

Parents are invited at the start of the year to provide input and feedback related to the scheme of work for PSHE and these are taken into consideration by the Deputy Head for Pastoral and the leader of PSHE.

Special Educational Needs and Disability

Teachers are ambitious for all pupils including those with SEND, developing and adapting the curriculum so that it is coherently sequenced to all pupils’ needs, starting points and aspirations for the future; acquiring the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.

We recognise that there may be times when pupils with SEND may require additional intervention to support the PSHE curriculum and, where resources allow, this will be provided by the Learning Plus Team.

Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) in the Curriculum

At BCS we provide a comprehensive programme based around RSE curriculum. This involves staff working groups, student feedback and a clear policy in place. The education of RSE is delivered by trained professionals providing a consistent broad and balanced approach to the content delivery and assessment. This is also supported by the assembly and tutor sessions throughout the year. 

How PSHE is assessed at BCS

PSHE is assessed in multiple ways throughout the scheme of work. Within each PSHE lesson staff assess the learning and adapt the pitch, pace and challenge to support the individual learners. At the end of each unit the students are provided with a summary quiz to check the understanding throughout. This provides the teachers, pastoral team and leader of PSHE with an opportunity to review the scheme of work and use the given catch up time to focus on areas of development.

How is PSHE reported at BCS?

PSHE is reported within the grade card framework at BCS. Each tutor will provide a statement that best describes the students learning throughout the term and process this on the grade card provided to all parents. We also have a sequence of parents evenings to be able to discuss PSHE developments with the tutor.
